Dreamhack Denver Survival Guide:

  • MOST IMPORTANTLY: If you ever plan on going to an event like this, especially a Dreamhack, remember to go back and listen to this episode the month before or the week of. I made this mistake with the Hero Power guys breaking down Dreamhack Atlanta.
  • Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize. You will not be able to do everything. There’s just no way. So think through, “What are the things I would be really sad to miss out on?”
    • Hearthstone tournament took all of Friday night and Saturday until early afternoon. Side event then took the rest of that night and Sunday morning. Pick your battles
    • Lots of fun to watch the matches live with all the fans and a lot of pros there.
  • Hearthstone Area Tips
  • Check if there’s wifi. Surprisingly, there wasn’t.
  • Watch out for swag and giveaways! They’re sneaky sometimes. Monster is amazing
  • Board games, card games, arcade, VR… Even a BYOC for people who didn’t BYOC
  • Bring snacks… Or full meals.

Is Coaching and playing with other players useful? Does it speed up development?

    • For the 2 weeks of this event, they’ve made arena very different by offering Dual Classes
    • You’ll first choose a hero portrait, then you’ll choose from 3 hero powers from other classes
    • As you’re drafting your deck, you’ll have neutral options as usual, but class cards will be offered from the classes of your portrait and your hero power!
    • Discussion
    • First week is over, but if you login between Oct 31 and Nov 6, you’ll get a free Arena run AND two free Frozen Throne packs.
  • Blizzcon is THIS WEEK, which means that we’ll very soon know what the last expansion for the year is.
    • The four team names are…

      • Grimestreet Grifters - Mean Streets
      • Jungle Giants - Un’Goro
      • Chillblade Crusaders - Frozen Throne
      • Big-Time Buccaneers - ????
    • Blizzcon Virtual Ticket we mentioned last time -- They’ve revealed what the Golden Legendary is -- Marion the Fox. And he’s definitely a pirate
    • They also announced a tournament called The Inn-vitational. Very similar to Oktoberbrawl, where they’re bringing together some big Hearthstone personalities for a lighthearted, fun competition.
    • It looks like pirate/Booty Bay/treasure is what’s coming our way

Dreamhack Denver Grand Prix Recap:

Let’s first talk about the highlights that don’t involve me:

  • MTGKid - 12 years old - NEVER judge your opponent at any point through the match
  • Ike - Never lost a match. It is possible to play flawlessly and be rewarded for it.
  • All the other pros - It’s possible to get shaken, thrown, or choose poorly. I’m so glad I’m not a pro player.

As for me…. :D

  • The way the Grand Prix goes is that it’s 9 rounds where each round you’re matched up against someone with the same record as you
  • After those 9 rounds, they take the top 16 players, and put them in a single elimination bracket.
  • I ended up going 6 and 3, putting me 1 win away from making it into the top 16. And I’ll talk about these losses later, but I’m really proud of where I got overall.
  • The matches were played Last Hero Standing format, which is different from the typically Conquest format. In LHS, when you lose with a deck, you cannot use that deck any more in that match. It lends itself to making you want to play decks that really snowball and win a lot of different matchups. You brought 4 decks, and in each matchup, your opponent would choose 1 of your classes to ban, usually not knowing the exact decklists that you brought.
  • So I decided to bring 3 decks that are really good (Tempo Rogue, Razakus Priest, and Jade Druid), and a 4th that I know really well which counters Druid (Murloc Paladin). The strategy was to ban Rogue because that deck has a very high winrate against most decks.
  • My 3 losses were to some names that most of you don’t know (I didn’t know them going into the weekend), but they are quite accomplished. My first two matches were to Squid and ESOGlokta -- both qualified for the summer championship of HCT. Crazy. Nicest thing I heard all weekend was Glokta at the end of our 3-2 match saying, “I was really hoping this match was going to be easier than that.” The third loss was to a guy named Insom who was in the top 4 of Dreamhack Montreal. Yeah. Pretty good.
    • But I was crazy encouraged, because none of these were runover matches. I won a game against Squid then got rolled by his Aggro Druid deck (really smart choice). And the games with Glokta and Insom went all the way down to the 5th game. And I know I made some mistakes in each of those matches, so had I been better prepared, I think I could’ve even done better.
    • Definitely was encouraged to hold my own against each of them, and learned a ton from each match. All 3 guys were really nice and eager to talk through the match and help me think through how I could’ve played better.

Squid - HCT Summer Americas Finalist, full time college student (ended DH at 6-3)

He brought Druid, Priest, Rogue, and Warlock

I banned his Rogue, he banned my Priest

  • First match was his Warlock Zoo vs my Tempo Rogue
  • I was ahead for most of the match.
  • He had to risk playing a Doomguard, and from it, he discarded Bloodreaver Gul’Dan--Writing was kind of on the wall at that point
  • He brought his Aggro Druid after that and swept against my Tempo Rogue, Jade Druid, and Murloc Paladin
  • Big bummer was that in that last matchup, he had Hungry Crab in his opening hand. That game was unfortunately decided early from that draw.
  • I learned from this that Murloc Paladin is a fairly decent matchup against Aggro Druid. I should’ve queued that before my own Druid.
  • His draws were just really good, and I struggled to keep up with him.

ESOGlokta - HCT Summer Americas Finalist, F2P player, this was his first Dreamhack, later played JustSaiyan on stream and lost (ended DH at 6-3)

He brought Druid, Priest, Shaman, and Rogue

I banned his Rogue, he banned my Druid

  • He started with his Jade Druid and crushed my Tempo Rogue and Razakus Priest. He drew all his ramp, and I realized that I wasn’t thinking about how to beat Jade Druid, I was only thinking about what my deck wanted to do. I also wasn’t drawing what I needed for the Priest game.
  • I brought it back with Murloc Paladin beating his Jade Druid and Token Shaman.
  • It all came down to his Razakus Priest against my Murloc Paladin
    • This match came to a really tough decision. I had an Ashbringer in hand, he had Lyra at 3/10. I had him down to 6 health and had 5 minions on board. I thought I could close it out the next turn if I just got aggressive and hoped that he just wouldn’t draw too many cards off Lyra. He ended up getting 20 cards or so off her. I really should’ve stopped that Lyra and then tried to establish myself for the win.

Insom - Top 4 at Dreamhack Montreal (ended DH at 6-3)

He brought Paladin, Druid, Mage, and Warlock

I banned his Warlock, he banned my Rogue

  • His Big Druid beat my Jade Druid right off the top
  • I finally learned to queue Murloc Paladin and beat him quickly :)
  • He came back with a Corpsetaker/Stormwatcher Murloc Paladin that swept my Paladin and Priest.
  • I remember feeling pretty fatigued since this was match 6 of the day and pretty late. I feel like I could’ve played this one better and certainly wasn’t thinking much about this kind of deck being in play at the tournament. Those Corpsetakers are brutal if you don’t have a way to stop them. Along with building an army of Murlocs, it’s definitely a strong deck.

Tsukaime’s Tricks and Treats

  • Life is a resource, not every minion has to be removed right away.
  • Take your time to decide what to do, you have 70 seconds per turn for a reason!
  • Always count how much damage you have for each turn, a lot of times you can setup lethal earlier to reduce the chances of a comeback.

You've heard about them. You've crafted them. You've thrown one or several into your deck at a time. But what the heck is up with tech cards? Scott (StrayDogHS) joins us on episode 101 to talk all about tech cards: What they are, how to determine if you need them or not, and... Oh THAT's what a tech card is. Now this game makes a whole lot more sense. :)

What is a Tech card?

            Does something specific narrow target

            No target no value

High cost – takes up a slot, dilutes deck, Requires the target.

            Reactive in nature

Andrew, agree? Thoughts?

What do you think about cards like Harrison J? good stats

How about Loatheb or kabla song stealer?

Silence – Ironbeak Owl (talk about why it was nerfed), Spellbreaker, Kabal Songstealer… What about Wailing Souls??

Minion removal - Golakka Crawler, Hungry Crab

Weapon removal - Acidic Swamp Ooze, Toxic Sewer Ooze, Harrison Jones

Secret removal – Flare, Kezan Mystic, Eater of Secrets

card removal -  Hemet, Gnomefuratu, skulking Giest, Death Grip. Fel Reaver,

Do you think it's lazy from a design perspective?

Do you remember

much about the earlier tech cards?

Any other thoughts?

Andrew what is your Favorite card from the frozen thrones release?

    • Reward Frozen Knight pack for 3 games
  • Ice Cream Citadel

Arena Tips

  • Know your classes!
    • Not always best to go with your “favorite” as some classes are just better than others in arena
    • Mage and Paladin are always solid choices
  • Know the cards that are just good in arena ( I suggest
    • Daring Reporter
    • Stormwind Champion
  • Know the tricky cards to play around
    • Against Paladin - Any buff cards, those 1/1’s are not to be treated lightly
    • Against Priest - Mind Control (Can tell my story of losing a Daring Reporter buffed by Spikeridged Steed

How to Win in Arena 2017

  • Watch out for AOEs - Mages (Volanic Potion, Meteor, Blizzard), Paladin (Consecration, Equality), Priest (Dragonfire, Holy Nova), Shaman (Volcano, Maelstrom, Lightning). They will have them - and likely more of them than you think.
  • Weapon Remove is really good to have. Weapons generate so much value for mana cost. Getting oozes helps - weapon offering rates was boosted in June/early July.
  • Staying “on the board” is important. Arena is more about pushing minions to face to win than constructed can be. Having minions on the board gives you options.
  • Curving out is important, so is card draw/cycling.
  • When comparing cards in draft, first ignore card text. If the card’s still good it’s worth drafting.
  • Discover Cards are VERY powerful. Getting to add a card to your hand that you choose during the game can often setup or just win you a game. Though saving discovers until deeper in the game if possible - more information about matchup and what you need the better

  • Midsummer Fire Festival is going on! If you haven’t logged in, you have more reason to grind out your quests than ever before. Double gold on all quests. No strings. How great is that! And it’ll last one more week, I believe.
    • Also if you played last week’s brawl, you have some fun fireworks for your Wow emote and a Midsummer Fire Festival greeting!
    • Fun to see them do things like this.
  • Knights of the Frozen Throne!!! - New expansion has been announced and is, as predicted, all about the Lich King and his cronies with a twist: What if everyone was dead??
    • Deathstalker Rexxar (6 mana) - Adds 5 armor to your hero, Battlecry: Deal 2 damage to all enemy minions

      • You will discover twice from 3 random beasts. Your two choices will be combined - mana cost, attack, health, and effects - and be added as 1 horrific additional minion to your hand
      • Dream scenarios??
        • Bittertide Hydra + Stranglethorn Tiger
        • Charged Devilsaur (or King Krush) + Angry Chicken
        • Jungle Panther + Dispatch Kodo
      • New hero power: Build-a-Beast - 2 mana - Craft a custom Zombeast
    • They did confirm that alternate heroes will still transform into whomever the card is for (ie. Alleria will be Deathstalker Rexxar, not her own Death Knight version) :’(
    • Spirit Lash: common Priest spell. 2 mana, Lifesteal, Deal 1 damage to all enemy minions
    • Chillblade Champion: common Paladin minion. 4 mana, 3 attack, 2 health, Charge, Lifesteal
    • The premise is around everyone becoming a death knight, so with that, there’s a new card type: Hero cards! Similar to Quests, this is another legendary for each class that will come with the next expansion. And they function similarly to Lord Jaraxxus when he’s played. They will replace your hero portrait, hero power, and do some other helpful things.
    • New mechanic: Lifesteal! We’ve seen this before in cards like Mistress of Pain and Wickerflame Burnbristle, but now it will be just a single word on the card. Whatever amount of damage is done is also restored to your hero.
  • Also, MISSIONS! You’ll fight your way to the top of Icecrown Citadel against many bosses you remember from that part of WoW. Best part is that these missions are completely free to everyone!
    • There are 3 wings, followed by a fight against the Lich King
    • You’ll earn 1 pack for each wing completed
    • There will also be a prologue mission that rewards you a legendary card (some report it will be a random hero card!)
  • Preorder is available now: $49.99 in US for 50 packs and a icy cardback
  • Andrew noticed… 4 mana 5/1 Warlock minion.. Aaaaand Shark Bear.

Full Guide

1x Smuggler's Run - A nice turn one buff or a nice way to round out your mana on a later turn.

1x Dirty Rat - A tech card that helps with quest rogue or exodia mage. Also a strong early game taunt against aggro decks.

1x Equality - A combo card to clear the board with your Primordial Drake.

2x Faerie Dragon - A dragon activator for Historian or Book Wyrm. A strong early game card against mage or rogue.

2x Grimestreet Outfitter - This card also helps you round out your mana on later turns and give those minions in your hand a quick buff before playing them.

2x Hydrologist - Discovering a paladin secret can do wonders for you in the late game. Picking a getaway kodo will allow you to bounce all those value cards back and use them again.

2x Netherspite Historian - Discover a dragon. Use this to pick up those end game minions and seal the game.

2x Aldor Peacekeeper - All around a great card for Paladin. Can combo with Book Wyrm on turn 9 for instant removal and board development.

2x Stonehill Defender - You always need 2 of these the taunt minions in Paladin are just too strong. Having 2 or 3 Tirion Fordring’s will almost always win you the game.

1x Wickerflame Burnbristle - Works great with the buff mechanic as he will heal more the more damage he deals. Also a strong card to absorb removal early so late game cards will stick longer.

2x Truesilver Champion - Best Paladin weapon hands down. Use this to gain back tempo and clear some of those midgame minions.

1x Twilight Drake - A 4 mana slot dragon. Not 100% needed in the deck but with the lack of 4 mana cards an extra dragon is nice to have.

2x Grimestreet Enforcer - Another buff card as well as a great tool to absorb more removal because if he stays on the board the opponent is going to regret it.

2x Book Wyrm - Great for dealing with taunt warriors since most of their minions have low attack. As well as a combo card with Aldor.

2x Ivory Knight - Your sustain. This card will not only heal you but give you some options of paladin spells that you are missing in this deck.

1x The Black Knight - A tech card that I love to have but can easily be swapped out for something else depending on what you are running into on ladder. Ex. Harrison Jones or Hungry Crab

1x Lay on Hands - Late game card draw and a nice heal. Can be swapped out if but I find the healing very good to have in a pinch.

2x Primordial Drake - Your only AoE as well as another activator for your dragon cards.

1x Tirion Fordring - Because it’s Tirion fricken Fordring!

The best Hearthstone podcast
I started listening to this podcast during the Hearthstone Beta. Josh was so nice to listen to. He was friendly and positive about having fun with the game. I took a break from Hearthstone but when I came back the first thing I did was download this podcast. While not as hardcore as other Hearthstone podcasts this one is my favorite. The guests are great and Andrew has done a wonderful job in taking over from Josh.

  • Quest Ideas - There are different gold amounts depending on the quest you complete it ranges from 40 gold to 100 gold or even a card pack. One tip would be if you get a 40 gold quest to hit the X on it and it will reroll the quest and possibly give you a quest that is worth more gold.
  • 2nd tip on quests to complete them the quickest you could try making a deck of all battlecry minions if you get the play 20 battlecry minions or 75 battlecry minions if you believe the deck will not win many game you could play it in casual mode or tavern brawl or even standard or wild depending if you're trying to achieve a certain rank that current month
  • I am one of those Timmy/Johnny type players in other words I want to gather every card in the game and make my own decks. So I enjoy when I am playing against someone if I see a cool card that they play and maybe I have the card maybe I don’t but an idea jumps into my head of how to abuse the card in a combo or just in a certain type of deck. So if you would like to also try doing this and you don’t want to lose rank try it in casual mode.
    • I would also suggest swapping over to Wild or Standard (whichever you don’t play typically) and getting quests done there! The benefit is that you can still work towards your 500 ranked wins for a hero. And if you lose, you won’t be upset about losing towards your rank.
  • Tavern Brawl - When there is the type of tavern brawl that causes you to make a deck it give you the opportunity to try any hair brained idea you might have depending on the tavern brawl rules. For example “Gift Exchange” was a tavern brawl where there was gifts that spawned on your opponent's side and your side I made a warlock deck that I focused on killing both the gifts on my side and my opponent’s side and with the gifts they gave you amazing cards. My point was all you need to do is win one game to get your pack so try your idea even if it might be terrible.
  • Filters - On the pc there will be a book in the bottom left corner of your collection it will show standard cards or all cards or any set you click on. There will also be a filter that you can use for the specific mana cost that you want to filter 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7+
  • Interface - I wanted to start with talking about card backs. You can set a different card back to each deck you have in your collection to do that on the pc you goto my collection open one of your decks or start a new deck and there will be a tab you click on with your mouse that looks like a card it will open your card backs you have unlocked left click on the card back you want to use and it will change the one that specific deck uses. There is also another tab that looks like a human it will show your Heroes you have unlocked by purchasing them or unlocking them thru an achievements if you're currently editing a deck it will only show the heroes of your deck type if you're not editing a deck under your collection then it will show all the heroes you have.
  • Searching - You can type the specific name of a card if you remember it and it will take you straight to that card or you can use keywords for example deathrattle, battlecry, heal using the keywords will either filter out the cards with the keyword in their name or their abilities.

The Ultimate Guide to Get to Legend - Episode 94

June 13th, 2017

News Chat

How to get to Legend

  • This guide is going to mostly be geared towards the player who hasn’t cracked into legend yet. Many things will be transferrable to every player (such as mindset and patterns to playing), but it does take more time and effort for the “everyman.”
  • Getting to legend is hard. It takes time. It takes practice. It takes intentionality. You will probably not get there by accident, especially if you’ve been playing for a while.
  • Thomas Jefferson said, “If you want something you have never had, you must be willing to do something you have never done.” If you want to get there, you need to do something different. So pay attention as we go through these tips to things you’ve never thought of or (much more dangerous…) the things you think don’t apply to you. Tread lightly when going down that road. Steve and I fought there, but Hat REALLY knows what he’s talking about in this realm. If you haven’t gotten there yet, be willing to try anything we say. We want you to win at this game and get that elusive cardback. It’s worth it.

The things you need…

  • Time
  • A deck you know
  • A deck that performs well
  • Mulligan skill
  • Game skill
  • A bit of luck
  • A good mindset! (We’ll talk about this a lot)

  • Getting to rank 15 - Making better in-game decisions

    • Draw first!
    • Trigger random effects first to maximize information
    • Trade before random damage effects (arcane missiles, c’thun, etc) to not waste damage/minimize number of targets
    • Hex, Consecration, Flamestrike, Shadow Word Pain/Death, etc.
  • Getting to rank 10 - Choosing the right deck to ladder with
    • Ladder lists vs tournament lists
    • Hearthpwn, hearthstonetopdecks, competetiveHS subreddit, VS data reaper, HSReplay
    • Picking the right deck for the meta you’re facing
    • Should you play the best deck if you don’t like playing the best deck?
  • Getting to rank 5 - Know what you’re playing against
    • VS Data Reaper
    • VS Live Meta Report
    • TempoStorm
    • Metastats
    • Tournaments
      • HCT
      • Global Games
    • Streamers
      • Kibler
      • Thijs
      • Firebat (when he’s tryharding, which is less lately)
      • VLPS
      • ADWCTA/Merps/Grinninggoat (for Arena)
      • Hafu (Arena)
    • Think, “what would I play here if I was playing this deck?”
    • Meta reports
    • Watching streams
    • Play all the meta decks, even in casual
    • Check for your own lethal as well as your opponent’s
  • Getting to Legend
    • Dealing with ladder anxiety!
      • It will be easy to overvalue every star - Blizzard’s grasp of addiction mechanics is second to none and the first time you hit a new ranked high, you’ll want to hoard your stars like a lil dragon
      • But you can’t win if you don’t press play. And losing a star is not a big deal if you expect to get it back
      • The volume of games you will need is substantial (as mentioned below) but you have to keep pressing play until you turn orange
    • Dealing with losing streaks
    • How a >50% win rate feels a lot of the time (lousy)
    • Knowing when to take a break
      • If you’re not enjoying hearthstone because of your drive towards a singular goal, maybe it’s the wrong goal for you
      • Don’t burn yourself out - it’s not worth it having a cardback in a game you don’t want to play any more
    • Dealing with RNG/”broken” cards or decks
      • Tech for it
      • Review your replays to play the matchup differently
      • If all else fails, change decks
      • These cards and decks are part of the game for better or worse and everyone is dealing with them; it’s your job as a competitor to figure out how to beat them
      • Just because you lost to Yogg nonsense doesn't mean you didn't make a decision early in the game that let your opponent live long enough to play Yogg
      • Yes, cards and decks are broken at times. Complaining won't fix it.
      • Accept that some matchups are just bad
      • If your stats show you that you're seeing a bad matchup a lot:
      • Complaining won't fix it; it will just lead to tilt
      • Some games may legit be due to bad beats, but you wont know that for sure without reviewing your losses
    • What it is
    • How to recognize it
    • How to prevent it
    • If you have a family, friends, or a significant other of any commitment, say “goodbye” to them. Just kidding… Kind of. The truth is that a lot of your life needs to shift and prioritize this goal. Assuming you have a 40 hour week job or are going to school full time, you don’t have unending free time or days to commit to this game. So the free time you do have in the evenings and weekends need to count.
      • Even better, if you have a couple weeks away from the kids or have a winter break or something, leverage those times. You’ll do much better when you can throw yourself at this game frequently and for long periods of time.
    • Rank 5 is halfway there
    • Plan to be at rank 15 by the 1st, 10 by the 7th, and 5 by the 15th
    • It takes 227 games (on average) with a 55% win rate to get from 5 to Legend:
    • Take your time; a single misplay can cost you an hour
    • Managing the mental game
    • Tilt
    • Playing percentages and knowing your outs
    • Understanding the time commitment
  • Track your progress
    • Track-o-bot
    • Hearthstone Deck Tracker
    • Record your games/HSReplay
    • OBS/record vids of your games
  • Celebrate your accomplishments even if you don’t hit legend
    • The top 0.25% of players end up at Legend out of 70+ million
    • Rank 5 - 2%
    • Rank 10 - 8%
    • Rank 15 - 25%
    • If you can hit rank 15, you’re still better than ¾ of all players; don’t be ashamed of that!

Ellak Roach - Is Wild Legend easier than Standard Legend, and if so, why?

YellowDart3 - So now that you hit Legend do you feel driven to keep hitting it or can you relax finally?

James Waddell III (Google+) - What deck or decks would be best in the current meta to get from 15-10 ?
